A brief history of the Balinese wood carving art form. The history of Balinese wood carving can be traced back hundreds of years Balinese art, as a whole, is of Hindu-Javanese origin. The art forms there began as a result of artisans from the Majapahit Kingdom who expanded to the Balinese territory in the 13th century. The village of Kamasan, Klungkung became the center for classical Balinese art during the sixteenth century, and remained as such until the twentieth century, when new kinds of art developed in the region.

Balinese wood carving, as an artform, underwent a period of transformation in the mid-twentieth century, roughly during the 1940′s. The main art center then shifted to Ubud and its surrounding villages. However, each independent village region is known for its own respective form of art. While Ubud and Batuan are synonymous with paintings, Celuk is known for gold and silver arts, Batubulan is known for stone carvings, and Mas is the place to go for wood carvings.

The appeal of Balinese art. The wonderful thing about Balinese art (though there are many things that are remarkable about this particular art form), is that the items are carved, painted, woven, and created to adorn or beautify objects that are used every day, rather than as merely works of art. Therefore, not only is a balinese handmade item that you purchase a beautiful example of craftsmanship that you can admire, but it’s also a practical piece that you could very easily use in most cases (though they are often far too beautiful to utilize daily).
